Beech Hedging (Fagus sylvatica)
Fagus Sylvatica also known as beech hedging is a popular native hedge in the UK. It is used as formal and screening hedging. Although beech is deciduous with its elegant green leaves from spring through to early autumn, beech will still provide privacy throughout the winter months by holding on to there leaves which turn to fiery oranges and browns.

Beech hedge are relatively fast growing and can grow between 30-60cm per year, even with a fast growth rate beech are easy to maintain and will only need trimming 1-2 times per year. Hedges are best trimmed in August as this will help retain the leaves throughout the winter months. However if your hedges do become overgrown, don't be afraid to cut back hard in the winter months.

Beech hedge can be planted in most free draining soils and in full sun/part shade conditions, they do not like heavy clay soils, and for these conditions we recommend using Hornbeam hedging. To plant a hedge we recommend to plant 3-6 per metre depending how dense you like you would initially like.
