Hornbeam Hedging (Carpinus Betulus)

Carpinus Betulus also known as European or common Hornbeam. It is used to make formal and privacy hedging. Its leaf is is very similar to beech which is ribbed and oval shaped, it is a vibrant green leaf throughout the spring and summer months which then turn yellow throughout the autumn.

Hornbeam are fast growing and can grow between 40-60cm per year which make is ideal to form a quick privacy hedge. It should be trimmed once per year we recommend mid-late summer.

Hornbeam is an ideal alternative to beech hedging as they can tolerate poorer ground conditions such as clay and wet soils, however they do not like prolonged waterlogged area's. They should be planted in full sun or part shade conditions. We recommend to plant between 3-6 per metre depending on the initial density you require.
